From Whistler, to Kootenay Lake, to 100 Mile House, there is a blanket of smoke over a massive area of B.C.

Environment Canada and the BC Ministry of Environment has issued a special air quality statement for numerous regions in the Province including:

  • Fraser Canyon
  • South Thompson
  • Nicola
  • Similkameen
  • Okanagan Valley
  • Shuswap
  • Arrow Lakes
  • Boundary
  • West Kootenay
  • Kootenay Lake
  • East Kootenay
  • North Thompson
  • West Columbia
  • East Columbia
  • Yoho Park to Kootenay Park
  • 100 Mile

Although smoke levels may vary community to community and are subject to sudden change based on wind direction and fire characteristics, until BC experiences a significant weather change widespread air quality improvements are not to be expected.

Several regions across the province are facing serious health risks due to the poor air quality, as outlined in BC's Air Quality Health Index chart.

Wildfire smoke is a natural part of BC's environment, especially during the summer fire season, but it can be a detriment to health conditions, considerably worse for infants, children, the elderly and sensitive individuals.
