Extreme Cold Weather Alert issued for Toronto

Torontonians are bundling up and hunkering down as they expect a significant drop in temperature to occur Saturday night.

Based on information from Environment Canada, Toronto's medical health officer, Dr. Eileen de Villa, issued an Extreme Cold Weather Alert for the City of Toronto on Saturday at noon EST.

The current temperature in Toronto is -9 C but it is supposed to drop to -15 C, -20 C with the windchill overnight.

Extreme Cold Weather Alert is only issued if the temperature reaches -15 C or colder, or when the windchill reaches -20 C or lower.

Residents are asked to keep an eye on the local forecast before heading outside and to dress in layers.

For some individuals in the cold, hypothermia can be a concern. It occurs when the body's core temperature drops below 35 degrees Celsius.

Frostbite can also occur, so it's important to wear warm socks, footwear, mitts, hats and scarves.

The Extreme Cold Weather Alerts also activates local services that help provide more shelter beds and transit tokens for people who are homeless.

More than 2.8 million people live in Toronto, making it Canada's largest city and the fourth largest in North America.

Meanwhile in southern Quebec, Environment Canada has issued an Extreme Cold Alert for Lac-Saint-Jean and Chibougamau, where it's currently -21 C and expected to reach -27 C.
