June 2021 weather wrap up: Dry again, several degrees above seasonal temperature average

It's been a very dry year so far.

For the sixth consecutive month, the Kelowna area has received very low precipitation compared to seasonal values.

Our monthly precipitation statistics so far this year are as follows:

• January 2021: 13.2mm or 42.6% of the monthly average (Average 31.0mm)
• February 2021: 11.0mm or 57.9% of the monthly average (Average 19.0mm)
• March 2021: 2.6mm or 12.0% of the monthly average (Average 21.6mm)
• April 2021: 7.4mm or 25.4% of the monthly average (Average 29.1mm)
• May 2021: 3.5mm or 8.7% of the monthly average (Average 40.2mm)
• June 2021: 13.5mm or 29.4% of the monthly average (Average 45.9mm)

June is typically the wettest month of the year. However in June 2021, with only 13.5mm of rain, we received less than 30% of seasonal.

With the historic heat wave last month, it was very hot compared to other months of June. Our average daytime high was 29.1°C last month, several degrees above our seasonal June temperature of 24.2°C. Overnight lows were also above seasonal at 13.6°C, compared to 12.9°C.

All monthly statistics in this article are based on data from the weather station at the UBCO, and the seasonal statistics in this article are based on the Canadian climate normals 1981-2010 data.

The first few days of July will continue to be very warm, despite the end of the extreme heat. A warm air mass will stay over our region through the first weekend of July with daytime highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s over the next few days.
