Alternative Bluegrass Band, The Trips, Drop Debut Album

Alternative bluegrass band, The Trips, are set to release their debut full-length album. The record drops next month with an album release show scheduled at the Kelowna Community Theatre for the evening of April 9th.

The prodigiously talented Kelowna band burst onto the local scene in the summer of 2013 when they could often be found busking in the downtown core. From there, it didn’t take long for The Trips to become a beloved local act. In the time since, they’ve even appeared onstage for the Prime Minister!

The Trips is Graham Ord (guitar, mandolin, bass and vocals), Shamma Sabir (fiddle and vocals), Jesse Padgett (banjo, bass and vocals) and Joshua Smith (guitar, bass and vocals). Jonathan Tromsness (bass) and Ben Beveridge (mandolin and fiddle) occasionally join the band as special guests.

As you might imagine, The Trips can’t wait for their record, titled Love Came Calling, to drop, with Graham Ord commenting, “We are very excited to release the record and to see how our fans react to it. The music has been best described as velvet with some grease and grit!”

The Trips have won many fans with their high-energy performances and authentic sound, so what can fans expect from Love Came Calling? “We all contributed to the writing on the album which is very strong, there's no throwaway tunes on this record”, explained Ord. Continuing, “We draw from the old classics but we have also taken it a bit out there as well. The album is full of joy, angst, love and loss. It relates to everyone which is why the Trips have been so well received I think.”

In addition to being a gifted band, The Trips are also community-minded with Ord revealing, “As a band we really believe in giving back to our community so we have partnered with some local charities for our CD release to ensure that people who might need some extra joy in their lives can also join us. We have donated tickets to the Karis Society, to Metro Community and the the Canadian Mental Health Association…”

Tickets for the April 9th gig are $20. This includes entry to the event and a copy of Love Came Calling. Saskatoon’s Jen Lane will open the show. The concert starts at 7pm, and is presented by Streaming Cafe. According to Ord, the gig “will be a fun celebration of our music and the people who have supported us in the journey to perform it. If it don't turn you on, you ain't got no switch!”

Tickets can be bought in person at the Kelowna Tickets - Box Office and Concierge in Orchard Park Shopping Centre, or online.

You can find the trips online via their official website. Listen to the band’s Live Off The Floor EP (2013) HERE.
