Lately I’ve been feeling a need for simplicity in my life. I’m not entirely sure why this started, maybe the California lifestyle is rubbing off on me. I’m craving simple foods, I’m making simple paintings, and I’m wearing simple outfits.
I’m finding that while I want my style to reflect how I’m feeling at this particular juncture in my life, there is a thin line between a simple outfit and a boring outfit. I don’t want my outfits to be overly complex or dramatic, but I still want them to be interesting and I want to feel good about the way I look. So how do you go about creating an outfit with simplicity that is compelling and not uninteresting? Scroll down to read a few tips.
Pick items that have an interesting shape. Rather than just wearing jeans and a t-shirt, in the outfit pictured above I chose a pair of pants with a slouchier fit and a great texture that are on trend. Wearing items with a unique silhouette will make a seemingly plain outfit stand out.
Play with textures. A basic black skirt becomes far more interesting in faux leather, tweed, or silk. Contrasting textures in your outfits is another great way to make them stand out. Pair that faux leather skirt with a chiffon top for an edgy yet feminine simple outfit.
Add some accessories. They can be statement items or more minimalistic pieces. In the outfit above I chose a chunky necklace to dress up a basic outfit, but dainty jewelry works just as well. I recently bought a simple gold bangle that fits the aesthetic I’m interested in right now, but I still feel like it adds something special to any outfit.
Wear pieces that fit you properly. I have said this so many times but it’s really so important. The first thing I notice about simple outfits that look great is that the garments fit really well. A simple dress that fits your body is going to look much more put together than one that is made for a different shape.
Wear an interesting or unexpected colour. A classic blouse with some emerald green trouser pants is a seemingly plain outfit that looks stunning. A funky pattern can be fun too. I wore these patterned pants above with a basic chambray shirt to tone down the crazy pants but the overall effect is far more interesting than it would be if I had worn black pants. Wear your basic pieces with something fun for a simple and eye catching ensemble.
Invest in some key basics. A white blouse, a chambray shirt, some black trouser pants. Having high quality basics will take any look to the next level. Your simple outfits will feel way more put together if your basics are beautiful on their own.
