Introducing Headspace: A fresh way of thinking

My name is Roz Huber. My full name is Roslyn and I go by many nicknames. I was born and raised in the small community of Joe Rich in the outskirts of Kelowna. This place is where I learned what family is all about. My parents live in the same house I grew up in and this is where I’ve come to understand why I am the way I am.

I used to bike and run and ski and snowboard just steps from my backdoor, and before I was old enough to drive I found my love of basketball.

Springvalley Middle and Rutland Senior were my stomping grounds. This is where I learned about real people and honest connection. This is where I learned about believing in others the way people believed in me. This is where I learned about support and true leadership.

Now, you might not see why these things matter in a health and wellness column, and I want you to think again. I am the product of my past. I am a result of my experiences, both positive and negative. I am molded by time and my environment. And so are you. The things that I’ve learned before is why I do what I do now.

I am a trainer and I teach yoga. These are things I grew to love through my career at UBC Okanagan. I played five years of basketball for the women’s varsity program and graduated with a degree in Human Kinetics in 2013. What I learned as a leader on the Heat team has shaped me into a female who encourages growth in the people I interact with.

I love to connect. I love this community. I love meaningful conversation. I love red wine and dark chocolate. I love to hate burpees and spin sprints. I love good food and bonfires in the bush. I love coffee and firm hugs. I love moving my body, and most of all, I love helping people who are willing to grow and evolve in all aspects of their human condition, not just their physical body.

This column is a way for me to share my passion for health and fitness with you. This is a way for you and me to connect through my words. This is a way for me to engage your mind and challenge the deconstruction of what you know to be true in old thought and behavior patterns. You will discover ways to clear space for new patterns to be integrated as positive changes in your life, and that really excites me!

Stay tuned for more on mindfulness, workouts, nutrition, and a fresh way of thinking! Headspace can be found every second Sunday on KelownaNow.
