Mother Mother takes 'The Stand' in Kelowna

The Kelowna Community Theatre came alive on Wednesday night with indie rockers Mother Mother in town.

It was the second B.C. date on the band’s tour of their new album, No Culture, which started a month ago in Moncton, New Brunswick.

An impressive opening set from Illinois native K.Flay, who has opened for Mother Mother for the entirety of the Canadian tour, showcased the singer's unique raspy vocal stylings along with her pop-rock electronic hybrid sound.

K.Flay's 45-minute performance did a perfect job of setting the stage and hyping up the crowd for the main event.

The crowd grew anxious in the dark as the stage lights flashed one by one and the soft sounds of a xylophone played.

Those soft sounds built up into a strong percussion beat, which was the cue for the band to come on stage and the opening to their first song, Free, which is also the lead song on the new album.

The opening tune was enough to get the crowd right into the show before the band dove into a couple of older tracks, starting with Body of Years from their 2008 album O My Heart.

From one fan favourite, they jumped into another and got the entire crowd dancing and smiling with one of their most successful songs, The Stand.

The quirky tune had the entire KCT crowd moving to the music, setting the stage for a fun night that showcased a decade of Mother Mother music.

Reaper Man was up next, the first song the band played from their 2014 album Very Good Bad Thing, which meant they had covered four of their albums in the first four songs of the show.

The show trucked on with another song from their new album, Love Struck, and the title track from O My Heart, before the band covered a fifth album by playing the popular Let’s Fall in Love from 2011’s Eureka.

Fans were then treated to another couple of tunes from the new album as the band slowed it down a bit for Letter and Baby Boy.

Ryan took a few seconds to chat with the crowd after those before the band jumped into a crowd favourite from Very Good Bad Thing in Monkey Tree.

They followed that up with Wrecking Ball from O My Heart and had a treat in store for the audience after that when they broke into a cover of Led Zeppelin’s Dazed and Confused as a transition into their funky, unique track Hayloft.

The initial part of the show came to a close with two of the band’s biggest songs in Bit By Bit and Get Out the Way, before the band exited the stage to a barrage of cheers.

Calls for an encore from the crowd were answered by the band as they came back out and played a pair of songs, including the title track from No Culture, to close out a fantastic night of music.

Mother Mother, made up of siblings Ryan and Molly Guldemond, along with Jasmin Parkin, Ali Siadat and Mike Young, delivered a show that Kelownians will not soon forget and the B.C. band is one this province can be very proud of.
