This concert marks Skin And Bones’ one year anniversary. This Vancouver based ensemble consists of guitarist Gord Grdina, drummer Kenton Loewen, and clarinetist François Houle. Juno award winner Gordon Grdina is an accomplished guitarist and oud player who encompasses mainstream jazz, free-form improvisation, Arabic classical music, and is a long-standing member of Dan Mangan + Blacksmith. François Houle has released more than twenty recordings, earning multiple Juno award nominations, and is frequently listed as a “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” and “Rising Star” in Downbeat’s Critics’ Poll. Dan Mangan + Blacksmith drummer Kenton Loewen has been a major presence on the improvised music scene in Vancouver for many years, having been a member of Mother Mother as well as collaborating with the finest luminaries of the international creative music scene. Grdina/Houle/Loewen perform complex compositions that meld together density, ferocious energy and technical virtuosity. The group’s versatility and wide dynamic range has become finely honed creating an ensemble that can change course dramatically. The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art is an artist-run centre located in Kelowna, BC at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, 421 Cawston Avenue. The Alternator is a registered non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the development of the creative community. Since 1989 the Alternator has shown the work of emerging Canadian artists and focused on innovative and non-traditional mediums engaged in social and cultural issues. Since 2014, the collective Grdina/Houle/Loewen has been performing completely improvised concerts and different permutations of graphic scores. Recently, however, the group has forged a new stream of complex compositions that meld together density, ferocious energy and technical virtuosity. The group’s versatility and wide dynamic range has become finely honed creating an ensemble that can change course dramatically. Drummer Kenton Loewen has been a major presence on the creative music scene in Vancouver for many years. He studied percussion with Bernie Arai, Craig Scott; and improvisation with François Houle before embarking on a highly successful freelance career as a first call musician for projects ranging from alternative rock to collaborating with the international creative music scene’s finest luminaries. Kenton says, “Musically, and otherwise, experimentation is at the heart of my life's work and I would describe myself as an improviser. … It's important to eradicate boundary and preconception as the musician and the listener. Music, to me, is the nature of being singular enough in mind and spirit to play the sound of oneself with the strength and intention of transcending even the instrument that expresses this sound, let alone the self that must relinquish. I have worked and played worldwide for the better part of the last 20 years. I've toured endlessly with Submission Hold, Mother Mother, Peregrine Falls, Dan Mangan + Blacksmith, Boxcutter, The Gordon Grdina Trio and The Crackling to name a few working projects. I've worked with Mats Gustafsson, Fredrik Ljungkvist, Mark Helias, Tony Malaby, Giorgio Magnanensi and a bunch of other geniuses to boot.” Clarinetist François Houle has established himself as one of today’s most inventive musicians in all of the diverse musical spheres he embraces. With solo appearances at major festivals across Canada, the United States, Europe, Houle has released more than twenty recordings, earning multiple Juno Award and West Coast Music Award nominations. François has developed a unique improvisational language, virtuosic and rich with sonic embellishment and technical extensions. He is frequently listed as a “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” and “Rising Star” in Downbeat’s Critics’ Poll and Reader’s Poll. François studied at both McGill University and Yale University and has been an artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Umbria, Italy, and was a featured soloist in the International Clarinet Association’s 2007 and 2008 ClarinetFests. He is a faculty member for clarinet instruction at both the Vancouver Community College School and the University of British Columbia. Houle has served as Artistic Director of the Vancouver Creative Music Institute for five years and in 2008 he was appointed as “Associate Composer” of the Canadian Music Centre. http://www.francoishoule.ca/ Juno award winner Gordon Grdina is an accomplished guitarist/oud player whose sound is a combination of his interests in mainstream jazz, free-form improvisation, and Arabic classical music. Aside from his own avant-garde Gord Grdina Trio, Gordon leads the Persian contemporary ensemble Qalandar and is one half of the free-punk duo Peregrine Falls. Haram is Gordon’s main ensemble for the exploration of Arabic classical music. Grdina has recently formed an NYC based quartet with Tim Berne, Matt Mitchell, Satoshi Takeishi, and he is also a long-standing member of Dan Mangan + Blacksmith. Gordon has collaborated with Gary Peacock, Paul Motian, Mats Gustafsson, Evan Parker, Colin Stetson, Samuel Blaser, Jerry Granelli, David Tronzo, Fredrik Ljungkvist, Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten, Fred Lomberg-Holm, François Houle, Benoit Delbeq, Jeb Bishop, Eric Boeren, Michael Moore, and Michael Blake. Grdina has performed at many festivals across Canada and Europe, most notably the Festival International de Music Actuelle de Victoriaville, Calgary Folk Festival, Glastonbury, Reeperbahn Festival, Ottawa Folk Festival, Guleph Jazz Festival, Natt Jazz Festival Bergen, Bimhuis Amsterdam, Burning Eagle Festival, Haldern Pop, Vancouver Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Halifax Pop, and Osheaga. https://www.facebook.com/events/890457957729683/ The Habitat 248 Leon Ave events@kelownanow.com
