2016-06-23 19:30:00 2016-06-23 23:00:00 America/Vancouver The Thing and Cortex Internationally renowned Scandinavian garage rock/freejazz trio The Thing (Mats Gustafsson –saxes, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten – bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love – drums) have established themselves as one of the most important European jazz groups in the world, playing their own compositions as well as material by PJ Harvey, Albert Ayler, The White Stripes, Steve Lacy, The Stooges, The Sonics, The Cramps, Lightning Bolt and The Ex. After more than 600 concerts around the globe, six studio albums including their collaborative release with Neneh Cherry and a variety of live releases over the years, The Thing presented their seventh album SHAKE in 2015. With dedicated fans in the rock, noise, and jazz communities, The Thing continues to create with uncompromising levels while maintaining an important position in the contemporary independent music world. Cortex is Thomas Johansson (trumpet), Kristoffer Berre Alberts (saxophone), Ola Høyer (bass), and Gard Nilssen (drums). This Norwegian quartet offers a corpus callosum between the spirited free jazz of Ornette Coleman and an altogether more modern improvisational hard bop (with even a whiff of John Zorn’s Masada thrown in for good measure.) Truly exhilarating music that will set the perfect tone for the night and subsequently deliver listeners into the jaws of The Thing! $22 / $20 for Alternator members The Habitat 248 Leon Ave events@kelownanow.com
