2016-07-15 16:00:00 2016-07-15 16:00:00 America/Vancouver Govind Saran's Comedy Fundraiser 4 Julia Grassmick On Friday, July 15th Kelowna Comedy and Govind Saran of Kelowna Remax will be presenting a night of comedy to help raise money for local two year old, Julia Grassmick. The show will feature several of Kelowna’s top talent and 100% of proceeds will to helping Julia. Here is a message from Julia’s father, Ryan Grassmick. Our daughter, Julia suffered a severe spinal cord injury on October 15, 2015 due to a spontaneous hematoma (blood clot) which was compressing her spinal cord. Julia was 16 months old at the time. Because of this, Julia has been paralyzed from her waist down. Over the 8 months we have been and spoken with many doctors which all have various opinions. We have been to Shriners hospital in Sacramento, California, Project Walk in Carlsbad, California and in August will be going to Shriners Philadelphia. We have done a lot of research on facilities and treatment centres that help people recover from paralysis due to spinal cord injuries. The unfortunate part is that these facilities are privately owned and therefore the therapy session costs are out of pocket. Currently Julia is attending therapy at First Steps Wellness Centre for Spinal Cord Injuries in Vancouver every Monday to Thursday, however they do not specialize in pediatrics. We have located a very highly reputable facility in Baltimore, MD called Kennedy Krieger Institute which aims to help children with spinal cord injuries recover to their fullest potential. At Kennedy Krieger Julia would attend a 2 week program using various pieces of equipment (many of which we do not have access to in Vancouver) and at the end of the 2 weeks, the therapists would provide a detailed program to send us home with. In addition, their therapists would be willing to communicate with Julia’s therapist at First Steps to continue the progress. The cost estimate for this 2 week visit is $12,419 US which equates to approximately $16,265 Canadian dollars. Travel expenses would be in addition to this; however we may be able to get funding for those travel expenses only through the At Home Program through the Ministry of Children and Family Development. This specialized therapy is going to give Julia the very best chance to walk again and we are hopeful to be able to visit this highly recommended facility. Thank you to everyone for their generosity and support throughout this whole ordeal, we appreciate it more than everyone knows! Please also visit Julia's facebook page for additional information, photos and videos about how she is doing. https://www.facebook.com/pleasehelpjuliawalkagain/ Dave Kopp reached out to me recently after seeing Julia's story on Kelowna Now. He immediately wanted to do an event for Julia through Kelowna Comedy donating all of the proceeds from this event to Julia! His friend Govind Saran from Remax Kelowna quickly came on board to help with promotion. Thanks to Dave and Govind any funds raised from this event will contribute to the trip to Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore we plan to go on. Dakoda's Comedy Lounge 1574 Harvey Ave events@kelownanow.com
