The Kelowna Museums presents an illustrated talk on the Paddle Canada 150 expedition
For the month of June 2017, a group of like-minded paddling enthusiasts set about a unique way to celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary. For the full month, they paddled sections of fur trade rivers between Fort St. James in northern BC to the final day paddling the Rideau Canal into downtown Ottawa. That rainy but momentous day ended with a wonderful reception by the Anishinaabe Nation on Victoria Island in the middle of the Ottawa River!
While three canoe crews paddled the full length of the journey, different sections hosted other local canoe crews and paddle clubs. Between Fort St. James and Prince George, for example, roughly 150 people joined in. On the final day’s paddle into Prince George more than ten canoe crews and their support teams were enthusiastically welcomed by a Lheidli T’enneh Elder, Edie Frederick and the Mayor of the City, Lyn Hall.
These 26 foot long voyageur canoes hold a crew of 6, and each of the three canoes had a ‘switch-out- crew to take over half way through the day. So, for the trip across Canada, roughly 40 people learned a lot about each other and were privileged to see something truly spectacular about the breadth of the nation and the kind nature of its people.
On the evening of October 18, the Kelowna Museums will be hosting an illustrated talk on the Paddle Canada 150 expedition. Join Wayne Wilson and Bob Groves as they recount the journey, the adventure, the hard work, the rain, and the thrill of seeing these beautiful parts of Canada from three feet off the water.
The Kelowna Museums Society provides the public with educational exhibitions and programs that foster personal participation, stimulate curiosity, and engage the senses with the cultures, histories, and possibilities of the Okanagan region. The Kelowna Museums Society operates the Okanagan Heritage Museum, Okanagan Military Museum, Okanagan Wine & Orchard Museum, and Kelowna Public Archives.
