In Focus | GeoLyn Mantei of QuickShot Media

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
GeoLyn Mantei

What do you always find yourself saying?
Thank you!

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
Warren Buffet AND Ellen DeGeneres. I believe corporate responsibility is important and both these people are committed to giving back; Ellen through animal rights and Warren Buffet through his commitment to donate 99 per cent of his wealth. Ellen DeGeneres has built success around what she loves to do and Warren Buffet is *all* business – a day with them would be a lifetime of information!

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
Top 40 under 40 (Top 30 would have been great, but I’m a couple years over ha ha so going for the under 40).

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
I think it would be interesting to chat with the guy who invented the yo-yo or maybe the person who came up with the Rubik’s cube. Probably not what you expected but both toys are loved by my seven year old son and those darn toys, they frustrate me! I just can’t seem to figure them out. When I was young I used to peel the stickers off the cube and rearrange them but my son, he is much more patient than I and figures it out, colour by colour.

Who inspires you?
My grandma. She is in Saskatchewan so I don’t get to see her or my grandfather very often. She is a beautiful, strong, driven woman. In addition to raising four children, she built a business back in the days when not a lot of women were entrepreneurs. She has had struggles, success, love and loss. I can rely on her to offer advice; she has supported me in unimaginable ways, and even gives me a good ol’ grandma lecture when I need it. She is an amazing woman.

What are three things on your bucket list?
Travel the world, complete my book, start an organization…and maybe jump out of a plane

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
P2. My children’s names are Porter & Pfeiffer.

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
July 17th, 2020. Just seems like a solid choice.

What are you passionate about?
Family, making a difference, business, and community.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
The day my children were born.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
I’m proud of my first company, Kootenay Quickshot, an arts and culture publication. I also co-founded Kootenay Music Awards which is entering its fifth year. It was through realizing these visions that I found my passion for entrepreneurship. Having the ability to utilize my expertise in media and marketing, while supporting charities and giving back to the community has been a very rewarding experience.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
Lunch, a sandwich from Italian Deli is my go to. I don’t know what they do but those deli girls: they make sandwich magic. For dinner out, we always head to Basil Leaf in Glenmore for their spicy wontons and Chilli Chicken.

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
In the winter skating downtown or heading to Big White for a day of adventure are probably at the top of the list or enjoying a walk downtown or hiking up at Bear Creek.

What is your mission?
Create | Captivate | Connect Inspire through great service, excellence, commitment and respect for our clients, partners and audiences. We will push the status quo, creatively implement a campaign and challenge ourselves continuously to exceed in our industry.

If you could achieve one thing what would it be?
I have a vision for an organization that assists women in transitioning from dreamers with a vision to women with a cause. I’ve witnessed so many incredible women demonstrate strength and resilience, even in the midst of tragedy, and I believe women can be catalysts for positive change, in our families, our communities, and the world. Through workshops and affiliate programs, I want to empower women from all backgrounds with mentorship and guidance to help them overcome the obstacles between where they are today and where they see themselves in the future. From counseling someone through a conflict to mentoring a budding entrepreneur, we’ll offer guidance, knowledge, and resources so women have the tools to shape their own futures.

Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?
We always joke about taking over the world, but, realistically, I’d like to see the company continue to grow, delivering strategies and solutions to partners, clients and audiences. To continue to push the status quote, challenging ourselves to exceed in the industry.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
I truly admire our partner, Momentus Software. They design and develop innovative products, apps, and hardware for clients like Lululemon and Starbucks. They’re always pushing themselves to work in new and emerging fields. Plus they are really great people to work with!

What qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
We talk about the Common Thread. This is a process geared towards the development of a simple, singular truth about a brand. We take that truth and we weave it into everything we do; in our own brand, this is collaborative experiences. Internally, this means our team, partners, and suppliers all understand that we are better together than we could ever be apart. When it comes to our clients, we treat them as partners. We value their knowledge, insight, experience, and ideas and we layer that over our strategic processes so that together, we reach the best possible results. We are great communicators, within our own team, and with our clients. We know that the best results happen when everyone can voice their ideas and we’re constantly excited by how feedback makes our creative work that much stronger. We value open doors and open minds, and we make our clients partners from the very beginning. There are no egos at QuickShot Media and we don’t get hung up on titles or job descriptions; we have a common goal of doing great creative work and gaining amazing results for our clients, so all ideas are welcomed and considered.

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
Oh I am constantly thanking everyone ha. QuickShot would not have grown to where it is without the support, trust, slight frustration and loyalty from so many people. Thank you for believing in me. In QuickShot and helping the vision and dream become a reality!

How does your business/organization impact the community?
We believe in local. Wherever possible, we want to work with local teams and partners and we want to help local businesses. We focus on growth and partnerships, and being part of local organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce. We volunteer and offer our expertise to assist with the growth of community initiatives, spreading the message on events or fundraising efforts. We may have international clients, but we’re proud to call Kelowna home.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
I am claustrophobic and this would be a very scary situation for all parties involved. Kicking. Screaming. Hyperventilating. But, that aside, I’d love to hear their stories of success. Their struggles and how they overcame them, the lessons and knowledge gained and how they continue with their growth.

If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:
Nothing! You see, I’m from the prairies where it is -40 degrees in the winter and has bird size mosquitos in the summer so…‘nuff said?

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The incredible flow of entrepreneurs and business owners, the feeling of community.

My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:
Sharon Strang, The Wellness Spa (Best Western Hotel)
