In Focus | Amy Essington

Meet Amy Essington.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My daughter, Alia. She’s been through so much over the years and her smile lights up a room and just makes you appreciate all of the little things and not take anything for granted.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Back to Disneyland to see Alia smile again so big! We went in November with the Sunshine Foundation and the smile that trip brought to her face was breathtaking.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
I love our beautiful city and enjoying our summers poolside. Also, love going to our amazing wineries!

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
When I accidentally knocked over a mannequin walking through a store, it fell over blew apart. It's funny now but not so funny at the time.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
My daughter. She inspires me to be a better person for her. She has special needs and has had a lot of health challenges over the years. She inspires me daily to always be thankful!

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
My aunt used to take me, my sisters and my cousins out for pizza and then to the wave pool in Vancouver! We always had so much fun.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I plan to help out in the community this coming year with assisting seniors, families and kids with special needs. Also by being a part of the team at Coldwell Banker, we supported four families this Christmas at the food bank. It's wonderful to give back to such deserving families!

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Inclusiveness! To make things inclusive and accessible regardless of abilities.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
Sparkling Hill for sure. So relaxing. My husband could come too!

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
Having more accessible options for people to live! My daughter having special needs it’s super important that our town be inclusive and support people so they can be included and have the same options and opportunities as everyone else.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The people for sure! There are so many people that truly will go out of their way to make someone else’s day great!

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Travel to somewhere tropical. I’ve only been to the states so I would love to go to Mexico or Bahamas or something like that
2. To go back to Disneyland and Disney World to see Alias eyes light up again
3. Buy a vacation property

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I’m terrified of heights!

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Facebook and Instagram.

What is the name of your business/organization?
Realtor at Coldwell Banker Horizon Realty.

Why did you get into/start this business?
The first reason was my passion and love for real estate. The second was after my daughter became critically ill last August, I was unable to work my full-time job anymore and had to take some time away. Becoming a realtor was the best decision I’ve made!

What is the goal of your business?
To help families like mine with kids that have special needs find their homes and support with resources. Also to offer accessible options and housing for people requiring either a wheelchair accessible home or just a universally designed home.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
This last year was tough with my daughter being so sick and then to leave my full-time job to care for her. But it’s the saying 'everything happens for a reason' is so true! I would never be where I am today without those things happening.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I think I would have just trusted the process more and not fight all of the other stuff that happens along the way. It all brings you to where you're supposed to be in your life. Fair or not, life has strange ways of working.

What do you always find yourself saying?
'All will work out!'

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Life can be hard sometimes. Things happen that we don’t understand at the time but there is always a reason behind them. Be thankful for every opportunity we get.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
I should probably say someone famous or really good looking, but I would totally want to take my daughter and let her spend the whole day with her idols, the sisters from Frozen, Elsa and Anna.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Local businesses are so great. The service, the quality, and the owners. I take any chance to shop local!

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
After a bunch of stressful events over the last year, I decided to take my real estate course. I went to Vancouver by myself every week for six weeks to take the fast track course. It was such a fun adventure! It felt so good to accomplish my goal of becoming a licensed realtor!

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
The Sunshine Foundation. They are absolutely incredible! Our dream trip to Disneyland in November was a life-changing. It was so nice to enjoy time as a family and not have to worry about a thing! We are so thankful for them giving us that experience.
