In Focus | Savannah Bagshaw

Meet Savannah, she has lived in Kelowna for four years. You might recognize Sav as the friendly face you see taking your picture at events around Kelowna.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
I honestly just love spending time with people! I think everyone has something valid to share and I love finding out what similar interests I have with anyone who is willing to talk to me. Even though I can be shy at times, I am always down to make new friends.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Underground Music! I'm a big vinyl junkie, and huge fan of classic rock and metal, they always have what I'm looking for there- it's my happy place. :)

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Catching any live show at Muninn's Post! The staff and venue are so welcoming and inviting plus they always spotlight amazing up and coming talent. The people I've met there are just amazing!

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I think working for the company that I do provides me with daily inspiration. Having the opportunity to watch our team and outlet grow has been incredible. The people I get to meet, the stories I get to share and the incredible opportunities I get access to, constantly feed the urge to learn, challenge myself and go after the things that I want.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
As incredible as the music scene is here in Kelowna, I wish it was better supported. The talent that resides here deserves every opportunity to grow and flourish to its full potential. Don't get me wrong, I think the city and the people here are doing incredible things but I think there is still a lot more to be done.
One thing that I think could go a long way is a great mid-size venue that can host larger crowds for local acts but also be a beacon for larger bands around the country and potentially the world. Similar to the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The amazing sense of community pride! Kelownians love their city and their city loves them! There is always a ton of events going on to support local creators, and to really just brag about how amazing the Okanagan is. It is unreal!

What are 3 things on your bucket list?

  1. To photograph a major music festival like Heavy Metal in Montreal.
  2. Owning a Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 Telephoto Lens.
  3. Always loving my job!

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I broke my wrist in a mosh pit once and it was the best thing to ever happen to me!

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
@_savybagshaw on instagram

What is the name of your business/organization?
KelownaNow

Why did you get into/start this business?
I have a wild dream of becoming a music journalist and live music photographer. KelownaNow is a platform that cares so deeply about it's community, the artists here and the events that take place. Since I moved here I have wanted to work at KelownaNow.

What is the goal of your business?
To keep the community and visitors connected! Sharing the "Stuff That Matters", from community news to business profiles and community events, we try to focus on all things Kelowna but in a very personal way.

What do you always find yourself saying?
My dude!

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Work hard, listen to good music and don't doubt yourself!

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Lester Bangs! He is by far my favourite music journalist and to have the chance to talk with him, pick his brain and here all of his fascinating stories would be the ultimate!

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Landing this job and having the chance to photograph some incredible muscians and bands that I only ever dreamed of having the chance to. Also becoming more involved in our local music scene, and seeing/photographing more live, local shows!

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Leagh and Siobhan at Muninn's Post and Joe and Paula from Underground Music! Two incredible local businesses run by incredibly kind and humble individuals.

My choice for the KelownaNow In Focus spotlight is:
Both of the couples and businesses mentioned above!
