Canadian Business magazine compiles an annual list of Canada’s 100 richest people. The list is now into its fifteenth year. According to the magazine, the wealth of Canada’s 100 richest people increased by 15% this past year. That puts the combined wealth of the 100 at $230 billion. That’s more, according to the most recent figures available from the United Nations, than the GDP of New Zealand, Ukraine, Ireland and many, many others. So who are the richest Canadians? Here’s the top 10:
1) Thomson Family (Thomson Reuters, Woodbridge Co. Ltd.) - estimated wealth: $26.1 billion
2) Galen Weston (George Weston Ltd., Loblaw Cos. Ltd., Holt Renfrew) - estimated wealth: $10.4 billion
3) Irving Family (Irving Oil Ltd., J. D. Irving Ltd. - estimated wealth: $7.85 billion
4) Rogers Family (Rogers Communications Inc.) - estimated wealth: $7.6 billion
5) James Pattison (Jim Pattison group) - estimated wealth: $7.39 billion
6) Estate of Paul Desmarais, Sr. (Power Corp. of Canada) - estimated wealth: $4.93 billion
7) Saputo Family (Saputo Inc.) - estimated wealth: $5.24 billion
8) Jeffrey S. Skoll (eBay Inc., Participant Media) - estimated wealth: $4.92 billion
9) Richardson Family (James Richardson & Sons Ltd.) - estimated wealth: $4.45 billion
10) Carlo Fidani (Orlando Corp.) - estimated wealth: $4.08 billion
