The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) has released its annual list of popular baby names and some Star Wars character names were very popular.
According to the SSA the top boy’s name for 2014 was Noah, as it was in 2013, and the top girl’s name was Emma again for a second year. Other popular boy’s names for 2014 included Liam, Mason, Jacob, and William. Popular girl’s names last year also included Olivia, Sophia, Isabella, and Ava.
While the top 10 names for both sexes sound pretty normal, some very unique names also topped the list for 2014. There was a big increase in the number of parents who named their children Bode, Gannon, Royal, and the ever popular Anakin, who is famously known as Darth Vader. A total of 218 newborns in the United States were named Anakin in 2014. But that’s not the only pop culture name from the movies to hit the list as 509 girls were named Leia in 2014.
Game of Throne’s character Khaleesi also landed on the list for popular girls’ names and was the 755th most popular baby name for a female. The girl’s name Miley decreased in population in 2014 as did the name Bently for a boy. Some of the least popular baby names for 2014 included Brantley, Jackson, and Declan, as well as Zoe, Lainey, and Avery.
The SSA gathers information for the annual list through Social Security numbers issued by the end of February 2015.
