Hotels look pretty clean on the outside but in reality they can actually be pretty filthy.

TravelMath has tested a number of surfaces at hotels and the results are in on what objects you should never touch when you’re on holiday in your hotel room.

A team of dirt diggers went to nine different hotels and collected 36 bacteria swabs.

At 3 and 4-star hotels the dirtiest place to touch is the bathroom sink followed by the remote, however in a 5-star hotel it’s the other way around.

The bacteria was measured in colony-forming units (CFUs) and the amount of CFUs found may actually disgust you.

  1. Bathroom Counter – 1,288,817 CFU/sq. in.
  2. Remote Control – 1,211,687 CFU/sq. in.
  3. Desk – 604,907 CFU/sq. in.
  4. Phone – 4,252 CFU/sq. in.

The dirt was uncovered in 3-5 star hotels with 3-star hotels coming in with the least amount of germs. In higher-end hotels, even though they’re luxurious they tend to be a little less clean.

A number of hidden-camera exposes have revealed that some hotel personnel will wipe down a countertop with the same cloth as they used for the toilet. <who> Photo Credit: TravelMath

We know however that hotels will never be impeccable but on your next getaway maybe remember to wash your hands often and bring some hand sanitizer or disinfectant.
