Woman Pleads with Black Bear as It Chomps on Her Kayak

A video of a black bear snacking on a woman’s kayak has gone viral as she pleads with the animal to stop eating her mode of transportation.

Mary Maley was on a solo kayak trip from Ketchikan to Petersburg Alaska when a curious bear attacked her kayak. The incident occurred just outside of a US Forest Service cabin in Berg Bay and was caught on video. According to Maley, she had just finished carrying her tent, food, and gear into the cabin to dry off and prepare for a hike when she heard something strange.

“I heard something outside as I ate my lunch, and well, I never got to go on that hike. This video is taken five minutes after the attack began, he continued to gnaw on it for another five or 10 after the video ends,” explained Maley.

Maley yells at the bear in a frenzy as she fears that she will be stranded in the remote area.

“It’s the end of September, why are you here? You are supposed to be asleep,” she screams at the bear.

Shortly after the bear left, Maley managed to drag the kayak back to the cabin and swam out to an anchored boat for help. She was eventually taken to a nearby town to have her kayak repaired.
