VIDEO: Helicopter footage shows aggressive fire behaviour in high winds

A video posted by BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) over the weekend is showing why a little rain isn’t doing much to help firefighters across the province.

The video was shot at approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday above the Bishop Bluffs fire, which is around 130 kilometres west of Quesnel.

It was posted to show extreme fire behaviour driven by high winds that was seen throughout much of the Cariboo Fire Centre over the weekend.

“Extreme fire behaviour such as this is a force of nature and suppression efforts are ineffective,” explained the post on Facebook. “The focus of the BCWS shifts to ensuring responder and public safety and protecting values.”

The BCWS added that even though the province is starting to see some rain, the potential for this kind of fire behaviour still exists once the beneficial effects of rain disappear.

They’re also reminding the public to abide by evacuation alerts and orders.
