A look back at Canada Post's history of strikes and lockouts

The lingering news of Canada Post striking has definitely left some residents with sour tastes in their mouths.

The rotating strikes created a huge backlog of undelivered mail and have put a halt on international shipping from some parts of the world.

Though this feels all too new, this isn't actually the first time Canada Post has gone on strike. Shown below is a timeline of Canada Post job action:

1965-2005:

  • Canada Post participates in 19 strikes, lockouts, and walkouts.
  • Workers are legislated back to work in 1987, 1991, and again in 1997.

2007:

  • No labour disruptions occur as Canadian Union Postal Workers strike four-year deal with Canada Post.

2011:

  • 48,000 Canada Post workers begin job action on June 2nd with rotating strikes.
  • Canada Post locks out workers on June 14th saying it can't operate under constant threat.
  • Conservative government tables back-to-work bill on June 20th, stoppage ends on June 27th.

2016:

  • Canadian Union Postal Workers wins challenge of previous back-to-work legislation in the Ontario Supreme Court.
  • Union and management sign two-year contract on August 30th without new distribution.

2018:

  • Canada Post workers begin rotating strikes in different cities on October 22nd.
  • Labour Minister Patty Hajdu tables back-to-work legislation on November 22nd.
  • Canadian Union of Postal Workers vows to fight in court if the bill is passed.
