Canada launches first ever National Housing Strategy

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada’s first ever National Housing Strategy, which is expected to cost $40 billion over a 10 year period.

The housing strategy aims to create 100,000 new housing units and will repair or renew another 300,000 housing units.

Through new initiatives like the National Housing Co-Investment Fund and the Canada Community Housing Initiative, the government aims to cut the number of homeless Canadians in half and bring 530,000 families out of housing need.

The federal government is pledging more affordable housing through the plan, which focuses on vulnerable groups, like women and children fleeing family violence, seniors, people with disabilities, Indigenous peoples, veterans, and those dealing with mental health and addiction as a first priority.

The strategy also focuses on the right to housing, meaning that no one is ever refused housing because of gender, religion, or background.
