Doctor who responded to the Humboldt Broncos crash calls it the ‘most tragic’ night of his career

A doctor with the Saskatchewan Health Authority is calling the Humboldt Broncos crash the “longest, worst, and most tragic” night of his career.

Hassan McMasri wrote an open letter on his Facebook the day after a semi-trailer collided with a passenger bus carrying members of the Humboldt Broncos.

“The images can’t be unseen or forgotten, the stories can’t be unheard or ignored. Meeting each family and explaining the extent of each injury was nothing short of a painful exercise of cruelty. Families waiting for hours to identify their loved ones and smiling of joy at the idea of a significant injury as long as it meant that their loved one was alive brought chills to my spine,” he wrote.

In his account of the previous night’s events, McMasri shows gratitude for all the people who helped save lives that night, including nurses in the emergency department and ICU, physicians, and the community.

“First and foremost: the nurses in the emergency department and in the ICU. Your tears made it easier for my tears to flow. Your passion, care and love is so admirable. I thank you for being the amazing humans that you are. You saved many lives and comforted hundreds of other lives,” McMasri wrote.

He ends by saying that he hopes this is his first and final Code Orange, hopeful that the many “painful hours” will be followed by “many hours and days of healing.”

The Saskatchewan Health Authority says that flags at their health facilities across the province have been lowered to half-staff in honour of the victims and families.

The #SKStrong tag is being used to tell the stories of all the people that the Broncos tragedy has affected.

Many are using the tag to spread the word about wearing green tomorrow to show support for the Humboldt Broncos.
