Interior Health's chief medical officer charged with sexually assaulting young child

Interior Health’s chief medical officer has been charged with sexually assaulting a young child, Mounties in Alberta have confirmed.

Albert de Villiers, 52, was arrested in Kelowna on Tuesday.

Grande Prairie RCMP said it received a report of sexual offences committed against a child on May 28.

The offences are alleged to have occurred between 2018 and 2020, the RCMP explained.

Before moving to the Okanagan in the summer of 2020, de Villiers spent 16 years as the lead medical officer for the Alberta Health Services north zone.

Mounties said the Grande Prairie Special Investigative Unit oversaw the investigation into de Villiers, with assistance from the Grande Prairie Caribou Centre.

De Villiers remains in custody awaiting a court appearance after being charged with sexual assault and sexual interference, police said.

They added: “As this matter is now before the courts no further information can be released.”

Interior Health is yet to comment, but as of 5:25 am de Villiers is still listed as the organization's chief medical officer.
