And this is no sketch. It’s a lovely new community near Glenrosa known as The Trails.

Because your friends at KelownaNow love exploring the Okanagan, supporting local businesses and sharing our experiences with you… we’ve teamed up with The Trails to show you some of the nearby things to explore in the City of West Kelowna… with one common theme: trails.

Check them out and if you take any photos, tag #KelownaNow on social media for a chance to be featured on our Instagram.

Smith Creek

Located a little less than a 30-minute drive from downtown Kelowna are the beautiful biking and hiking trails of Smith Creek. This winding series of trails are just up the road from The Trails, an ascending walk for you, your children and your pets to explore.

Smith Creek is a little more friendly to mountain biking than hiking, but any outdoor enthusiast will find peace in the wilderness. What makes this trail special is that most hiking trails in the city are exposed, whereas this forested area is mostly shaded. It’s a great way to escape the summer heat.

Go for a short walk or spend an entire afternoon exploring the loop. Just be safe and keep in mind that the higher you go biking or hiking, the more challenging the ascent becomes.

After you’ve explored the Smith Creek trail and you’re on your way back home, stop into the nearby family-owned wineries. Two of the closest are Off the Grid Organic Winery and Ciao Bella Winery, which has some award-winning Pinot Noir. These two humble wineries are also near the community of The Trails, so take a look at their website to see how you can try some.

In fact, the entire area is bustling with things to do. One of the benefits of living near Smith Creek, is that you can always find an exquisite collection of used books at Mad Hatter, go shopping at the Westridge Shopping Centre and take home a $10 take n’ bake pizza from Pizzamoreh to go with your bottle of West Kelowna wine. That’ll surely be the perfect way to end a day of getting fresh air while wandering the trails.

Boucherie Rush

This trail is on an extinct volcano… need we say more?

At the Boucherie Rush trail, you can go for a short walk or spend the entire day exploring the area that overlooks the City of West Kelowna.

Hiking these trails, you can spend as little as a half an hour or half a day exploring unique rock formations and streams of ancient solidified lava rock. But the hidden gem of this trail is the Antelope Brush. It’s a plant species that is indicative of the Okanagan’s Sonoran Desert and right here near The Trails is one of the most northerly areas where this brush can be found.

Some parts of the trail are easy enough for the whole family to do, while other parts, such as the northeast face of the mountain, is for those with hiking experience. When you go exploring Boucherie Rush, be aware of the signs because some areas are on private property.

And if you hear a grumbling, it’s not the volcano; you’re hungry.

After a day of hiking, you’ll surely want to order out from one of the many nearby Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery and Blu Saffron, then when you can, plan to someday have a picnic at Kalamoir Regional Park.

Rose Valley

Not too far from Rose Meadows Park is the Rose Valley trail. Here, you will find some steep areas to climb with some areas where you’ll need to watch for a sudden steep drop-off. If you venture into these areas, please be careful.

Rose Valley is your traditional one-way trail, which means you’ll be rewarded with a different perspective as you retrace your steps.

Be rewarded with stellar views, wildlife and volcanic cliffs marked by caves that were created by large air bubbles in the lava. Theses trails are so pretty you won’t need to wear rose coloured glasses to see the beauty… but it wouldn’t hurt to protect yourself from the Okanagan sun.

In such a lush region close to The Trails of West Kelowna, Rose Valley is populated with ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. Known for beautiful views of Okanagan Lake and hiking trails that are challenging, go explore the walk in the woods.

Rose Valley is accessible off Highway 97 in multiple routes. You can travel to these trails using the turnoff near Xoxo Couture or Cask & Barrel Liquor Store or if you’re closer to the bridge, look for the turnoff near Red Fox Club and Indigenous World Winery. Once you’re there, the park is accessible from Westlake Road near Rose Valley Elementary School.

Bear Creek

This is one of those places where you’ll pause to appreciate where you are.

BC parks describes Bear Creek as “truly a natural wonderland.”

As opposed to the forested area of Smith Creek, this area has hiking trails and a waterfall that experienced hikers and swimmers can brave the cold narrow straight up to the falls. Otherwise, follow the stairway to the top and look down on the falls instead.

As you continue your ascent, you see an incredible view that overlooks downtown Kelowna. If you haven’t seen this spectacular view before, we recommend that you add this trail to the top of your list.

As the furthest situated destination from The Trails in this list, Bear Creek has a family-friendly beach that’s a must add to your summer list of things to do, of course, when you can. Once social distancing has ended, stay at the campgrounds and enjoy a day on the trails. Looking forwards to the future is nice, isn't it? You may even want to bring along another pair of shorts because 19 Greens putting course isn’t too far off.

These trails will show you spectacular views of the City of West Kelowna and provide a tour of the new region surrounding the modern housing development of The Trails. To see more of the area, take a look at this trail map and if you like what you see, you can check out modern living at its finest with this virtual tour.

Whether it’s exploring the vast trail systems for walking, hiking and biking or taking advantage of the nearby waterfront and beaches, golf courses and wineries, The Trails offers the perfect setting to suit your family and lifestyle for years to come.

To experience life along the trails, visit the development on Glenrosa Road North or look for their On-line Virtual Tours.

The Trails Development now has four ready to move-in homes available. These include two Rainbow home plans, a Westcoast home plan and a Bowes home plan. All of these homes are situated across from a park setting and offer panoramic Valley and Lake views from fabulous home terraces.

Make an appointment with their sales representative for viewing opportunities at 778-392-8921.

Should you require any additional information about the homes or the Trails Community, their team is available by phone, Zoom video conferencing, Facebook and email info@thetrailsliving.ca.

For any assistance or additional questions, call and speak with Jaydene (Sales), she'll gladly assist you with anything you need to move into The Trails.

Just follow the markers or if you'd like more information, go online to visit The Trails.

All we ask is that you be careful, some of these regions are unsanctioned so travel the trails at your own risk.

The Trails has incorporated a vision of a brand new community of single-family homes and townhomes with sophisticated and modern architecture, perched on an Okanagan look-out offering spectacular panoramic views.
