As the Grade 12 students at Kelowna Christian School are finishing up their final year of high school, they got to open up their time capsules from their Grade 3 year two days before their convocation on June 3rd.
This unique tradition has been a part of Kelowna Christian School (KCS) and its students for many years, thanks to Mr. Doug Sader, a teacher at KCS for 32 years.
“In Grade 3, students prepare a time capsule for themselves throughout the year. At the end of Grade 3, students will typically write a letter to their future self in Grade 12,” explains Mr. Sader.
“Some students may include a newspaper sample, drawings, or even a keepsake from their Grade 3 self.”
Once completed, Mr. Sader seals and buries the time capsules, then digs them up when the students reach Grade 12 and are about to graduate.
This year’s Grade 12 students were thrilled to see what their eight-year-old self stuck inside their time capsules and they were not disappointed!
Students found self-portraits, a letter to their future selves, notes about their career dreams, learned about how they have grown up over the years and even other keepsakes.
Some had coupons in their time capsule for a Slurpee run with Mr. Sader, but there was a catch. If they cashed in their coupon, they had to be the ones to drive themselves and their old teacher!
“I don't have a big program or anything, but it's fun to do it together with all the Grade 12’s there at one time,” says Mr. Sader.
Not all of the students who made time capsules finished their education at KCS. Regardless, they are always tracked down each year so they can have the opportunity to open their time capsules full of special memories.
“It was amazing timing for the students to look back at their past while moving forward into their wonderful and unique futures,” says Sydney Cunningham, the KCS Community Engagement Coordinator.
The tight-knit community of students and families at KCS is incredibly important to the school. Some students join KCS for a 13-year journey from kindergarten to Grade 12, or even a 15-year journey from preschool to graduation!
Time capsules are just one of the many traditions that KCS proudly provides to make their student's graduation extra special and to show how much the school values them throughout their years of education.
Aside from the exciting traditions and extra experiences the students get to be a part of, KCS provides quality education from preschool to Grade 12. The school brings home and church together to educate, equip and inspire students to love people and serve God as their best selves.
