Good things come in all shapes and sizes, and in this case, it comes in the shape of craft beer.
New to the Kelowna scene, CRAFT Beer Market is a trendy restaurant serving up fresh, local food and great craft beer. Before even officially opening their doors to the public, CRAFT is already doing good work in the Kelowna community by giving back to local non-profit organizations.
Organizations like the Start Fresh Project Society.
In 2016, the Start Fresh Project Society found its stride in the Central Okanagan area by chef and founder Michael Buffett. The project began as a non-profit organization facilitating culinary and farm education to those who have a passion for food while creating job opportunities for those in the culinary industry.
“The Start Fresh Project was started to help people struggling with life get the skills they need to get jobs. It turns out it’s more than that — we really are building a healthier community, in more ways than we realized,” said the founder of the Start Fresh Project Society, Michael Buffett.
“The goal of Start Fresh is to teach people the skills they need to get jobs in the farming industry or in the cooking industry. We do that by inspiring them, by taking them out to our farm, teaching them how to grow and cultivate food, fresh organic produce. From planting a seed from harvesting, cooking or growing,” explained Buffett.
They didn’t stop there. The program has now expanded to a full-service culinary kitchen.
Start Fresh Kitchen is a community-based space where local chefs offer boutique cooking classes, host events and catering services throughout the Okanagan.
“We host cooking classes to give them the skills they need to not only cook great meals at home but to head out to jobs in the industry,” added Buffett.
With the help of local businesses, like CRAFT Beer Market, the Start Fresh Project is able to contribute towards social equity in the community through inspiring people about local, fresh food and by increasing access to educational and employment opportunities.
