Professional Surfer Survives Shark Attack During Competition

Professional surfer Mick Fanning was getting ready to compete in the J-Bay Open in South Africa when a shark suddenly approached him while he floating on his surfboard on Sunday.

The World Surf League said Fanning is okay, and the organization captured the shark attack on video.

You can see the dorsal fin of the shark quickly approach Fanning, who thrashes off his board and is able to fend off the predator.

Fanning was able to swim to the safety of the nearby boats and gave the crowd a thumbs up. Fellow surfer Julian Wilson was also in the water and also made it to the safety of the boats.

Fanning's leg wrap attaching him to his surfboard was bitten off by the shark in the altercation.

The World Surf League has cancelled the final of the competition.

The World Surf League also posted a Vine video of the incident. They also posted a video of Fanning recalling the attack, which can be viewed on the World Surf League website.
