Details Continue to Emerge About Oregon College Shooting

The Oregon state police department has issued an update regarding the shooting at the community college in Roseburg.

Police say they recovered 14 weapons from the suspect including six at the school and seven from his home, all legally purchased. The death toll remains at 10 dead, including the shooter, whom police say they will not be naming. The medical examiner’s office will release the name of the shooter, who has already been publicly named by the media, but the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office say they will not do so as it is a “horrific act of cowardice.”

“We would encourage media and the community to avoid using it, repeating it, or engaging in any glorification and sensationalization of him. He in no way deserves it. Focus your attention on the victims and their families and helping them to recover,” said police in a statement.

Police say the Umpqua Community College will reopen next week. A vigil was held on Thursday evening to remember the victims of the mass shooting. Seven people remain in hospital with various injuries as a result of the Thursday shooting.

Several heroic stories have surfaced from the event, including one about army veteran Chris Mintz. Mintz was hit several times when he charged at the gun man at the Oregon College. He was shot in the back, abdomen, hands, and both legs when he tried to stop the shooter. According to his cousin Derek Bourgeois, Mintz took five shots on his son’s birthday, but luckily no vital organs were hit and he should do okay.

It is just one of the many stories emerging from the tragic event that has shaken the small community.
