Federal advisory now says Canadians should avoid all travel to Haiti

Canadians should avoid Haiti under any circumstances, says the newest advisory from the federal government.

Global Affairs upgraded the advisory today as ongoing civil unrest continues in the Caribbean country, resulting in a number of deaths.

It’s also resulted in more than 100 Canadians being trapped in Haiti amid violent protests that have blocked major highways across the country.

The notice from Global Affairs warns that the situation could quickly deteriorate even more and that people should “consider leaving by commercial means while they are available.”

Emilio Bazile, an Ottawa-based physician, and three members of his group from the Maritimes are among the Canadians stuck in Haiti.

On Thursday, he said food is running low for him and his 10-member medical team, who travelled to southern Haiti to provide care for locals.

Another large group of Quebecers are stuck at the all-inclusive Royal Decameron Indigo Beach resort and are unable to make it to the Port-au-Prince airport.

Their flights through Air Transat are still running, but the airline has been unable to arrange ground transportation to get the travellers to the airport.

Global Affairs is providing consular advice to tour operators and has people on the ground in Haiti to try and provide assistance to Canadians.
