Concerns over the future of Central Green’s building site “B” ignited a lively discussion at Kelowna City Council today.
All city councillors voiced concerns over the building's proposed height of five storeys and were highlighted as a significant deviation from the original development plan of a tower-type building.
“The feeling surrounding this entire process has been ‘it’s coming’ but this proposal shows a fairly utilitarian building, so when is the urban, higher density phase coming?” asked Councillor Brad Sieben.
“I’m disappointed with how the public wanted higher towers, not on the waterfront but here (Richter Street and Harvey Avenue) and it has not happened. If you want to build in Kelowna, I expect world class buildings,” said Councillor Charlie Hodge.
Other councillors echoed these concerns, citing the lack of a “wow” factor and that the project meets only the minimum height requirement as key issues with the proposal from Central Green for Building B.
After a lengthy discussion that lasted over an hour, council passed a motion to defer the development proposal citing a need for more discussion.
The proposal for a five-storey, 108-unit building will go before council at a later date.
