A draft of the new Canada food guide may eliminate an entire food group

Public consultations for a new food guide will be finished by Tuesday, July 25th, and a draft of the guide shows a lot of interest in eliminating one of the major food groups.

The new draft of Canada’s next food guide de-emphasizes dairy and meat as a food group in an attempt to be more reflective of emerging diets and to, “improve the usefulness of the food groups.”

Health Canada may favour a more plant-based diet that focuses on more vegetables, fruits, and whole foods, and seeks to take dairy and combine it with the proteins.

Due to the rise of varied food types being consumed by Canadians, the draft guidelines take into account trends such as community gardening, gluten-free products, whole foods and plant-based diets, and an increasing presence of cuisines from cultures outside of Canada.
