The public is being warned about a collection of Indigenous ceramic plates that contain an excessive amount of highly toxic metal.
Health Canada said in a notice that it had sampled and evaluated the product – ”Indigenous Collection Ceramic Plates by Canadian Art Prints” – and determined it contained lead “in excess of allowable limits.”
“Lead is highly toxic, especially to children,” the agency explained.
“A range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead and cadmium, including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, heart and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths.”
Anyone in possession of the product is urged to contact Canadian Art Prints and Winn Devon Art Group Inc. for a refund.
They should then destroy the item, Health Canada said.
The art was created by Canadian artist William Monague, but the plates themselves were manufactured in Shenzhen, China, before being imported through BC.
Between July 2021 and February 2024, 1,429 of the products were sold in Canada and 81 in the US.
The company told Health Canada that it had received no reports of injuries associated with the products.
