$60,000 For House for Chronic Homelessness in Kelowna

Funding from the provincial government helped a Kelowna organization renovate a residence to house eight men with chronic homelessness.

Inn From the Cold's Chandler Street House project needed extensive renovations to make the building operational for the project. Though the society had a long bout of fundraising, they were unable to raise enough money.

In November, however, the provincial government gave $60,000 to help the society finish the renovations and have full occupancy. Chandler Street House gives men who have experienced chronic homelessness long-term housing and 24/7 staff support. The program includes life skills development with men learning skills such as cooking, conflict resolution, budgeting, and communication, as well as support from volunteer mentors and professionals.

“When people in need are given the stability of a home and are treated with dignity, it’s amazing to see how they respond and start to give back,” says Tara Tschritter, Agency Coordinator at Inn From the Cold. “The Chandler Street Housing Program is our way of creating this opportunity for chronically homeless men in our community. We are thankful for the support of the B.C. government as well as our strong base of volunteers and community partners who have all come together to help make our dream become a reality.”

“This housing facility doesn’t just offer eight beds - it offers life skills, compassion and hope,” says Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick. “I’m pleased to see the community come together to support those who benefit greatly from the services it offers.”

Men started moving into house at 1829 Chandler Street at the end of September.
