Health Canada issues warning about potentially dangerous log splitters

Health Canada has issued a warning about popular log splitters that could cause “injury hazards.”

The agency said the Oregon, PowerPro, Country Tuff and SpeeCo devices, which were sold by Princess Auto, should not be used if the wedge fails to retract.

Instead, anyone in possession of the products should get in touch with Oregon Tool to schedule a fix.

Health Canada said the firm has received two reports of incidents in Canada and five reports in the US.

There have been no reported injuries, however.

“The recalled log splitter’s hydraulic cylinder rod can separate from the piston, preventing the wedge from retracting,” Health Canada’s public notice about the devices explains.

“Re-engaging the rod to the piston can cause the rod and wedge to move forward at an unexpected increased speed, posing injury hazards. Consumers should not attempt to fix the recalled product themselves.”

Just under 4,700 of the devices were sold in Canada between 2020 and 2023. In the US, another 29,560 were sold.
