1. Insurance claims nearly doubled during snow storm, ICBC says

A Tuesday snow storm that paralyzed BC’s south coast on Tuesday resulted in a large number of insurance claims. ICBC says there were 3,567 claims made on Tuesday, nearly double than what was seen on the same day a week earlier. Find the full story on CBC.

2. Edward Snowden gets Russian passport

Edward Snowden’s lawyer has confirmed that the former US intelligence contractor recently got a Russian passport. That means Snowden, who exposed the scale of secret surveillance by the National Security Agency, has sworn an oath of allegiance to Russia.


3. World Cup group stage finishes today, knockout rounds start Saturday

Two of four matches to finish up the group stage at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar are underway this morning, with two more to kick off at 11 am. Come this afternoon, the field will be cut in half to 16 and the knockout rounds will begin on Saturday.


4. Paraglider crosses border from Morocco to Spanish enclave then disappears

Spanish authorities are on the hunt for a person who was seen paragliding over a border fence from Morocco and into the Spanish enclave of Melilla. Footage shows the unknown person landing near the fence and then running off. It’s believed to be the first time someone has used this method to migrate into European territory.


5. Ontario school bus driver charged with impaired driving after dropping students off

A school bus driver in the Greater Toronto Area was stopped by police shortly after dropping students off on Wednesday morning. York Regional Police says the 61-year-old male driver was given a roadside screening demand and subsequently brought to the detachment for a breathalyzer. He has now been charged with impaired driving and the bus was impounded.
