1. Shooting attack in Germany kills 9

Nine people are dead after a man went on a shooting spree in Hanau, Germany on Wednesday night. All nine people killed had a “migrant background,” although some were German citizens and it sparked an hours-long manhunt. Eventually, the suspect, identified as Tobias R. of Germany, was found dead alongside his 72-year-old mother in his home.


2. NFL proposes 17-game season and 7-team playoffs

The NFL’s upcoming CBA proposal has a couple of fairly notable rule changes that has football fans talking. The first would be extending the regular season to 17 games, which is one extra game per team. The second is adding another team to the playoffs in each conference, making it a seven-team playoff where only the top seed would earn a bye to the second round.


3. Syria’s Aleppo Airport resumes commercial flights for first time in 8 years

A commercial flight landed in Aleppo, Syria on Wednesday. While it doesn’t sound significant, it was the first time a commercial flight has taken off or landed at the airport in eight years. A motorway between the war-torn country’s two largest cities, Aleppo and Damascus, also opened earlier this week for the first time in eight years.


4. Two on board quarantined cruise ship die from coronavirus

A pair of elderly passengers have died aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship that’s been quarantined in Yokohama since Feb. 3. The couple was in their 80s and it raises the coronavirus death toll in Japan to three. Those on the cruise ship who have tested negative for the virus started to disembark on Wednesday.


5. Roger Federer will miss the French Open

Tennis superstar Roger Federer will not be playing in this year’s French Open, the second major of the ATP season. He announced that he underwent arthroscopic surgery in Switzerland on Wednesday and would need a few months to recover. He’ll also miss notable tournaments in Dubai, Indian Wells, Bogota and Miami.
