Merritt ranch owner doubles reward in search for missing cowboy Ben Tyner

The reward for information about a cowboy who went missing from the Merritt area over two years ago has been doubled.

Ben Tyner’s riderless horse was found on a logging road off Hwy 97 near Winnie Flats in January 2019, prompting a major search effort.

Police believe he could have been murdered.

Now John Liu, the owner of the Nicola Ranch in Merritt, has added $15,000 to the $15,000 reward the Tyner family had previously offered in exchange for information about Ben, bringing the total up to $30,000.

Speaking earlier this year, RCMP spokesman Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said: “The investigation into the disappearance of Ben Tyner continues to be diligently led by the RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit.

“To date, numerous investigational avenues have been explored, and in order to protect the ongoing investigation police are unable to share those findings publicly at this time. However, based on those findings, major crime investigators have reason to believe that criminality was involved in Ben Tyner's disappearance, and is the victim of a homicide.”
