Plane forced to make emergency landing on BC Interior highway

A member of the public came across a strange site near Salmo on Tuesday morning.

The RCMP said the person reported a small plane parked on the side of Hwy 6 around 9 am, which prompted an immediate police response.

A BC Highway Patrol officer arrived at the scene and, sure enough, found the 1969 Lake Capithian single engine aircraft pulled over to the side of the highway.

The pilot was close by and informed the officer that the aircraft suffered a “catastrophic” engine failure.

Unable to make it to an airport, they decided to attempt an emergency landing along the highway south of Salmo.

Their attempt was successful, as police said there was no damage to the plane beyond the engine and the pilot was unharmed.

The plane was later towed from the highway and the RCMP has notified Nav Canada of the incident, which police say appears mechanical.
