Many of BC's 122 new COVID-19 cases attributed to small gatherings, say health officials

Health officials in British Columbia have announced 122 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of active cases in the province to 1,614.

There are currently 60 individuals hospitalized with the virus, 23 of whom are in intensive care.

No additional deaths have been attributed to COVID-19 in the past 24-hours, leaving BC's death toll at 219.

Earlier on Wednesday, Interior Health issued a warning to anyone in contact with a 150-person campout at Bombi Summit in the Kootenay region to self-isolate.

The mass gathering occurred on Sept. 12 and 13, but officials report that both large and small gatherings continue to be a source of transmission.

“Large gatherings have been a steady source of transmission," said Dr. Bonnie Henry in a statement.

"However, many of the new cases we are seeing in the past weeks are from small gatherings where people see different groups of friends on different days – inadvertently spreading the virus to many people."

Officials also announced a any outbreak information for schools in the province will be posted on the BC Centre for Disease Control website beginning Thursday.
