UBCO Management Students Win Delegation of the Year at JMSM 2016

Held in downtown Montreal the John Molson Sports Marketing (JMSM) competition and conference, is the largest run sports marketing event in Canada and is hosted by the prestigious John Molson School of Business. It was created in 1995 with the aim of providing impassioned business students from across Canada marketing and sports industry knowledge. For the past 20 years and counting JMSM has brought together business students, General Managers, Franchise Executive Marketers, TSN Journalists, and other industry executives (from across North America) for a three day series of guest lectures, workshops and networking sessions, that will empower the sports business leaders of tomorrow.

“The business of sports is a competitive and heavily sought after industry. Who better to show you the path than those who have already travelled it? JMSM will be home to a variety of sports executives from a number of different fields to such an emergent industry. Not only will you have the chance to listen to these industry leaders, but have the unique opportunity to interact with them as well. Forgoing important contacts offers delegates a knowledgeable and connected resource to guide them in their careers.” - Kevin Gilmore, COO Montreal Canadiens.

An integral part of the JMSM experience is the case competition which sees delegates take on case studies of real – life companies such as ‘Reebok – CCM’ and ‘Hockey Without Borders’. This year the University of British Columbia Faculty of Management team consisting of; Daman Bual, Luke Cooke, Dale Moorman and Andreas Clark managed to make it past the gruelling, trial stages of the competition all the way to the final. Through what Andreas Clark described as “countless late nights revising [our] report and practising [our] presentation”.

Although the UBC Okanagan team placed third in the case competition, they did manage to take home the coveted ‘Delegation of the Year’ award. They received this 20th anniversary declaration due to their exceptional involvement with the conferences speakers, organizers and delegates at JMSM 2015. Not only does this boast high hopes for our four UBC students, this continues to advance UBC Okanagan’s Faculty of Management brand nationwide with some of North America’s top sports Franchise Executives.

Dale Moorman, one of the senior students on the team sat down after returning from his trip to share a few words; “The highlight of the competition was hearing UBC Okanagan’s name called for Delegation of the Year! It was a great feeling standing up there on stage in front of Canada’s top business students honoured with such a positive award. We could not have been prouder representing our sponsor [UBC Okanagan’s Management Student Association] and school!”

I am excited to watch as the UBC Okanagan’s reputation gains traction over the next few months with students traveling across North America to attend and compete in conferences and competitions; Sponsored by the funds of our Management Student Association, I am honoured to be able to take part in sharing with the Kelowna community what we do as UBC Okanagan Students.

The Management Student Association is a non-for-profit student run association representing over 800 management students at UBC Okanagan campus. The goal of the MSA is to connect management students with academic and professional development opportunities both locally and nationally. Keeping in line with this goal the MSA has partnered with KelownaNow to create the Campus Connection column, which will act as a bridge connecting members of the local business community to management students.
