BC has issued a license to a non-government cannabis store for the first time.
The license has been approved and issued to Tamarack Cannabis Boutique in Kimberley, B.C, a town of roughly 7,500 people in B.C.’s East Kootenay region.
The first government-operated BC Cannabis Store opened in Kamloops on Oct. 17, where it still serves as the only “brick and mortar” cannabis store in the province.
Cannabis can be purchased on the BC government website, where during the first week of sales the province recorded more than 21,000 cannabis sales transaction with the vast majority of those being online.
Obtaining a private retail sales license requires business owners to undergo financial integrity checks, receive support from local government and/or Indigenous nation, and complete a store inspection.
