Kelowna RCMP responded to a shooting in Rutland Monday, leaving at least one person injured.
The incident happened at a 7-Eleven gas station in the 100 block of Highway 33 East around 2:17 p.m.
A witness at the Lordco store located in the same plaza as the gas station said they heard a “pop” and saw an injured man outside of the 7-Eleven. RCMP confirmed one person had been shot and was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injures.
Witnesses believe the incident was caused by a robbery gone wrong and said the suspect fled on foot. A heavy police presence could be found one block away on from the gas station on Gibbs Road.
By 3:15 p.m. two marked police vehicles still occupied the area and the gas station remained taped off. First aid supplies sat outside the 7-Eleven as police conducted their investigation.
Schools in the area were placed on lockdown during the incident, but kids could be seen walking home near the gas station just after 3:15 p.m.
RCMP said the investigation is still in its early stages and will provide more information as it becomes available.
Kelowna RCMP are asking anyone with information to contact them at 250-762-3300 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
