You’ve heard of a pot of gold and the luck of the Irish, but have you heard the legends of Kelly & Carlos O’Bryan’s?
These are the fables behind how the legends of happy hour, Blarney Time and the 32-year-old tradition of receiving a free meal on your birthday came to be.
Long ago, upon winning a great battle a group of warriors, happy with their victory, entered the nearest tavern to celebrate. Filled with a great sense of joy, the warriors decided to share their treasure with the patrons in the tavern by purchasing endless drinks and appetizers.
As they passed around pints, pachos and chicken wings, everyone in the tavern began to join in with their exuberance. Witnessing this, the tavern-keepers decided that henceforth this time of day shall be known as: Happy Hour!
Historians believe this took place between the hours of 2 pm and 5 pm, sometime shortly after a local beer-league team known as The Warriors won their league championship — but there’s no way of truly knowing how this tradition began.
Legend has it that between the hours of 9 pm and midnight, mythological creatures appear in Okanagan Lake.
From a high vantage point, such as Kelly & Carlos O’Bryan’s enclosed heated rooftop patio, the townspeople claim to have seen a large serpent in the lake — whether that’s the mythical Ogopogo or just the statue next to the park, it’s up for debate.
It’s also said that between 9 pm to midnight is Blarney Time where you can order two-for-one appies at Kelly & Carlos O’Bryan’s.
Both of these are local legends, but only one of them is unequivocally real — we’ll let you decide which one you believe after a pint or two.
Every night at Kelly & Carlos O’Bryan’s as the moon fills the sky and shines on our great valley, you can relax in the comfort of Kelly’s or sit out on Carlos’ enclosed heated rooftop patio enjoying two appetizers for the price of one.
If you feel the need to have a pint or two, the designated driver in your group will receive a free non-alcoholic beverage at any time of day or night.
The story, or so it’s told, is 32 years of age.
When a young lad had made his way through another year, his friends decided to celebrate this annual event with a round of Guinness.
Entering a nearby tavern singing the song of his name day, the bartender overheard and promptly joined in. Arm-in-arm they sang Happy Birthday, cheering as if it was his last until a waiter overheard and told him his meal was on the house — inadvertently starting a 32-year-old Birthday Tradition.
Kelly & Carlos O’Bryan’s still honour that night. So when it’s your birthday, you can “Eat Drink and be Irish” for free!
Come by before 4 pm to receive $20 off one menu item or anytime after 4 pm until close to receive $30 off one menu item.
This time-honoured tradition has been so well received, that it inspired Kelly & Carlos O’Bryan’s to give back. With every birthday meal, $1 goes towards local charities like the Food Bank and the Salvation Army. To date, they’ve donated over $512,108 to local Food Banks across B.C.
Those are the legends and we hope you enjoyed them. When it’s happy hour, Blarney time or your birthday, come celebrate at the legendary Kelly & Carlos O’Bryan’s.
