Iconic Nitty Gritty Dirt Band take to SOEC stage tonight

It’s still not too late to pick up tickets to attend Thursday night’s concert by the iconic American roots music legends Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band are bringing over 50 years of performing folk, rock, bluegrass and country blues together to the South Okanagan Events Centre for one night only this evening.

NowMedia talked with longtime Nitty Gritty Dirt Band guitarist Bob Carpenter in late October and he commented on how the band has a new energy and is playing some of the best live shows in its more than 50 years together.

Founders Jeff Hanna and Jimmie Fadden founded the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band back in 1966 and were joined by Carpenter in the early 1970s. The band has since added Hanna’s son Jaime, his good friend and session musician Ross Holmes and singer-songwriter Jim Photoglo, who helped write Fishin’ in the Dark, one of the group’s biggest radio hits.

Fresh off their 18-month 50th Anniversary Tour, the profoundly influential Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, often cited as a catalyst for an entire movement in country-rock and Americana roots music, continues to add to their legendary status.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has received numerous Grammy Awards and Country Music Association nominations and awards and their 1972 groundbreaking album Will The Circle Be Unbroken has been inducted into the U.S. Library of Congress as well as the Grammy Hall of Fame.

The band’s recording of Mr. Bojangles was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2014, Fishin' In the Dark was certified platinum for digital downloads.

The band is playing in Penticton as part of a brief four-city tour of British Columbia, their last tour before they head back to the studios in early 2019 to record new material.

Recent tour stops have included Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Stagecoach and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival.

Their recent sold out concert filmed and recorded live for the 50th Anniversary at The Historic Ryman Auditorium has been shown to millions of viewers across the United States and Canada and is an Emmy Award-winning Public Broadcasting System (PBS) Pledge Special.
