(Update - 1 p.m.): Fire crews have managed to knock down and contain the Cinnamon Ridge grass fire.
According to assistant fire chief Dan Sutherland, the blaze initially started in the grass but eventually made its way into trees and timber.
"We have approximately 32 people on the fire ground right now from varying agencies," said Sutherland. "Approximately 24 of those are from Kamloops Fire and Rescue, actually the airport authority has come here with their crash truck... and we also have the BC Wildfire Service here with a crew of four as well."
The two-hectare fire only threatened one barn and was classified as an interface fire.
"What's burning in there is a lot of dry leaves, fine fuels, and dead trees that are on fire in the area so there are some heavier fuels in there."
"It's an interface fire would be the correct term here, we don't have any structures threatened. Initially, there was some concern with the high winds that we were seeing at the outset of the event for a barn maybe half a kilometre away but we are no longer concerned about that."
"As long as the conditions stay with what we are seeing right now, we do have it 100% contained at this time, we're in mop-up and clean up as long as we don't get pushed by a whole bunch of more winds."
There isn't a determined cause of the fire yet, however, investigators do not consider it to be suspicious in nature.
"Very speculative right now so I think it is best I do not comment on that until I have further information."
(Original Story): Kamloops Fire Rescue has been called out to Cinnamon Ridge for a blaze just outside of Kamloops.
According to KFR, all crews are responding to the fire. Witnesses say the blaze is near the Compost Facility and larger than a football field.
“It looked like two lawn mowers went up in flames,” said one witness at the scene, adding that the huge size of the fire makes it hard to see past the black smoke.
NowMedia is heading to the scene and will provide an update when more information is available.
