UPDATE: RCMP release names of victims involved in Kamloops shootings

(UPDATE: Jan. 24 @ 2:45 p.m. ) - Yesterday, the Kamloops RCMP responded to two separate shootings.

Since the incident, 50 investigators have been working around the clock to solve the cases.

The 31-year-old male victim of the Super 8 Hotel shooting has been identified as Cody Marcel Mathieu from Kamloops. He was previously known to police.

The victim of the Comfort Inn and Suites was 41-year-old Rex Edward Gill from Penticton. He was not previously known to police.

Police believe that organized crime was behind the violence, therefore, targeting specific people.

Anyone who may have information on either of these deaths is encouraged to contact Kamloops RCMP or remain anonymous through Crime Stoppers.

(UPDATE: 12:50 p.m.) - RCMP have just confirmed that the two male victims who were shot earlier this morning have succumbed to their injuries.

Police are now classifying these deaths as homicide.

“Currently we have numerous police resources, both uniform and plain clothes officers investigating both incidents. Given that both shootings happened within two hours of each other and in public places, we are asking the public to remain vigilant and mindful of any suspicious activity they may see in the community and report it to police,” stated Cpl. Jodi Shelkie.

(Original story: 9:50 a.m.) - At around 6:50 a.m. RCMP were called to the Super 8 Hotel in Valleyview in response to a man lying on the ground that appeared to have been shot.

The male was taken to a medical facility.

At 8:50 a.m. police were called to Comfort Inn and Suites on Roger way for another male who appeared to have been shot. He was also taken to the hospital.

Police do not know if these two incidents are related. At this time, no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made.

Some roads remain closed near the crime scenes while the investigation continues.
