Kelowna Man Arrested for Theft, Suspect for West Kelowna Theft Still at Large

RCMP were busy on both sides of the bridge over the Easter long weekend as multiple thefts occurred in both Kelowna and West Kelowna.

A 38-year-old Kelowna man is facing a number of charges after an attempted robbery at Safeway and a theft at Costco.

On Saturday, April 4th at around 1:30 p.m., the Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of a robbery at the Safeway on Highway 97 in Kelowna.

The male entered the Safeway and demanded money but was unsuccessful. He then left the store and took off in a vehicle.

Shortly after, the Kelowna RCMP received a call of a “purse snatching” at Costco. The description of the man and suspect vehicle were similar to those given at Safeway.

Police were able to locate a suspect vehicle which matched the Safeway and Costco incidents and attempted to stop it, but the driver failed to stop for police.

Police did not pursue the vehicle as there was concern for public safety.

A little while later, officers located the vehicle parked near Gordon Drive and Harvey Avenue. Police then arrested the lone 38-year-old male occupant of the vehicle without incident.

The man was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. The accused man faces charges of theft under $5,000, failure to stop for police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, attempted robbery, and failure to comply with a probation officer.

Meanwhile in West Kelowna, police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a suspect in a theft from a Superstore Gas station on Monday afternoon.

Around 12:45 p.m., a suspicious man entered the Superstore Gas Bar. He was described as just “hanging around.”

When the store attendant was busy helping other customers, the suspect male, as seen on surveillance video, entered into the office and stole the cash deposit. The culprit made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the West Kelowna RCMP, Constable Hall at 250-768-2880. If you would like to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
