150 rental units proposed for vacant property on Bernard Avenue

An application to rezone the former Monkey’s Playground on Bernard Avenue has been submitted at city hall.

Zeidler Architecture is looking to build a purpose-built rental building with 150 units at 1575 Bernard Ave.

This requires the property to be rezoned to medium density housing with a residential rental tenure. An amendment to the Official Community Plan (OCP) is also being requested.

According to the application, the six-storey building would be a mix of street-oriented townhomes with apartment units above.

“Being in direct proximity to the newly planned Kelowna Community Campus, the Landmark District and situated between downtown and UBC makes this use ideal for the vacant property,” reads the application.

Zeidler Architecture says the property will fit in well with the multi-family units to the south and surrounding neighbourhood.

The building would include two storeys of partially underground parking with access available off Noble Court.

A landscaped rooftop amenity courtyard is included in the design plans to give future residents a recreational area while saving on space.

The application was just submitted on Monday, June 27. It still needs to be circulated around city hall before heading to council for consideration.
