YMCA Cycle for Strong Kids hopes to raise record funds

The YMCA will be holding its largest fundraiser of the year this weekend and the community is invited to come by and participate.

The YMCA Cycle for Strong Kids event will take place on Sunday outside the H2O Adventure and Fitness Centre. Organizers are expecting a large turnout for the event, which means more donations for the YMCA.

“We have a record number of supporters this year and a ton of fun activities planned,” said Rhonda Zakala, GM of Fund Development at the YMCA of Okanagan. “Teams will be cycling on stationary bikes in 45-minute time slots beginning at 8 a.m. and new this year is a 3.5 km family bike ride along the Mission Greenway starting at 10:30 a.m. Drop by to cheer on your community members and enjoy the kids zone, face painting, a barbeque by donation beginning at 10:30 a.m., silent auction and more.”

Kelowna’s Olympic medalist Kelsey Serwa will also be supporting the event and signing autographs at 9 a.m. Funds raised through YMCA Cycle for Strong Kids will make it possible for the YMCA of Okanagan to offer programs that positively impact the lives of local, at-risk children, and those who otherwise can’t afford to participate.

Currently, one in five children across the YMCA of Okanagan are in need of YMCA donor funding in order to access programs and resources, and in YMCA Child Care this number is one in three. With a high number of children in the Central Okanagan living in low-income households, it is important that residents and businesses provide support to ensure the health and vitality of our community into the future.

The YMCA Cycle for Strong Kids runs from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. and the community is invited to join in and cheer on those involved.
