A Kelowna man has officially taken responsibility for a stabbing that killed another man on a city bus in 2014.
Tyler Jack Newton, originally from Alberta, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of 55-year-old Caesar Rosales in October 2014.
On Wednesday in Kelowna Law Courts, Newton pleaded not guilty to that charge, but instead chose to plead guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter.
While manslaughter holds a maximum sentence of life in prison, Crown council Colin Forsyth said the usual sentence falls somewhere between four and 15 years, unless there are special circumstances.
The case will go forward with sentencing by Judge Heather Holmes this week, after defense lawyer Jordan Watt asked for case to be dealt with without a jury trial.
Family of both Newton and Rosales attended the hearing, with the victim’s brother travelling all the way from their homeland of the Philippines for the sentencing.
